downward spiral

January 18, 2008

cory usually does such a tender
job singing to the girls
while tucking them into bed.

he often leads off with,
‘jesus, you’re my firm foundation’
and then sings
i am yours, you are mine’
in his earnest, melodic-ish baritone.

two nights ago,
i about choked.

the lights went off,
there was the normal little chatter
between the girls and their daddy,
and then i heard
it
.

‘i know a weenie man
he owns a weenie stand
he sells most everything
from hotdogs on down.
someday i’ll change his life
i’ll be his weenie wife
hotdog! i love that weenie maaaaaaaan’

?!
our old kamp song?!

okay, i kept breathing when
he followed it up with soothing,
true songs about jesus.

but tonight,
he struck again.

‘wellllll, iiiiiiii (uh ho - i knew what was coming)
walked around the corner
and i walked around the block
and i walked right up to the donut shop
and i picked up a donut
and i licked off the grease
and i handed the lady a five cent piece.

welllllll, sheeeeeeee
looked at the nickel
and she looked at me
and she said, ‘this nickel is no good to me,
there’s a hole in the middle and it goes right thru’
‘well, lady, there’s a hole in the donut, too!’

thanks for the donut,
you bet!’

oye.

what’s tomorrow night?
99 bottles of….?
miss susie had a steamboat…?

Does Cory know my favorite camp song:

Blaaaack socks! They never get dirty,
The longer you wear them, the stronger they get.
Sooooometimes, I think I should wash them,
But something inside me keeps saying “Not yet!
not yet, not yet, not yet,”

repeat whole thing faster and faster, in a sing-songy tempo…..

Just a boy and a girl in a little canoe
with the moon shining all around…

    No?

    Ok, how about
    She’s got hair of gold
    and eyes of blue
and her cheeks are rosy too
    and on her chest
    she wears a crest
    of Kanakomo blue
    She’s oh so sweet
    and really neat
in my mind she just can’t
    be beat
    she’s the sweetest girl
    in the whole wide world
    she’s a Kanakomo girl
    (sing it with me)
    a Kanakomo girl
    YEAH!

    Good times, good times…
